Sunshine Coast Switch Set for 28th May

By Sally Rocliffe

As you would have seen on TV in the past few months, analog TV signals will be switched off around Australia. To keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you must be ‘digital ready’. The switch date for the Sunshine Coast is Tuesday the 28 May 2013.

We have updated tenants about the change and advised them to be ready for the switch over by ensuring they have a digital TV or a set top box.

The owner of a rental property is obliged to keep the antenna system in working order. This would include upgrading it to receive digital TV or digital satellite TV. You may be able to claim a tax deduction for part or all of the cost of your antenna installation, purchase or upgrade.

Please note, if your rental property is advertised as furnished you will be responsible for supplying the set top box or digital tv.

An easy way to tell if you have digital free-to-air is whether you can receive ABC2, ABC3 or SBS TWO. These are standard definition channels, so if you can view them it means your TV can receive digital signal and that you have already made the switch.

Our contractors, Alcorn Communications and Jim’s Antenna’s Maroochydore have advised that the following equipment may be necessary:

  • Set-top boxes: A set-top box enables most analog TVs to receive a digital signal, so, in most cases, you won’t have to replace your old TV.
  • Personal video recorders (PVR): A personal video recorder has the same features as a set-top box, with the added benefits of a built-in recorder and a play-back device
  • Digital TVs: A digital TV receives a digital signal, so there’s no need to add a set-top box or PVR.
